This building once played a central role in communication for the newly formed colony of Victoria. Built in 1857–1858, the Former Geelong Telegraph Station became the principal centre of communications for Geelong and the surrounding district. From here, telegrams were sent to other major communication hubs across rural Victoria, as well as to Sydney, Adelaide, and Melbourne.
It replaced two earlier telegraph stations first a portable structure and later a brick office in McKillop Street with operations transferring to this Ryrie Street site in July 1858. The building was constructed by builders Patterson and Bell and was likely designed by Henry Ginn, Colonial Architect for Victoria in the early 1850s.

Messages were transmitted using Morse code, a system of dots and dashes that allowed information to travel instantly across vast distances for the first time in history:

For thousands of years prior, the Wadawurrung people had communicated across Country using message sticks. These two very different systems of communication — and worldviews — came into conflict during the frontier period, resulting in the dispossession of Wadawurrung land and a rapid decline in population. Despite this, the Wadawurrung people survived and continue to care for their Country and practise their culture today.
Time Ball Operations
The large ball atop the tower of this building is known as a time ball. Time balls were used around the world during the nineteenth century and were critical for maritime navigation. Accurate timekeeping was essential for mariners setting their navigational chronometers, without which determining longitude at sea was almost impossible.

Each day, except Sundays, the time ball followed a precise sequence. At 12:30pm, the ball was raised to half mast, warning observers that the crucial moment was approaching. At 12:58pm, it was raised to the top of the mast. At exactly 1:00pm, the ball was released and dropped.
This daily event benefited not only shipmasters but also merchants, commercial operators, and the general public, who used the signal to set their pocket watches and coordinate daily activity.

Imagine being a mariner anchored in Corio Bay in the 1860s. As you prepare for your next journey, you watch the telegraph station, waiting for the ball to fall. When it does, you know it is exactly 1:00pm. Recording that moment allows you to set your chronometer — your most important navigational instrument — ensuring you can calculate your position accurately once at sea.
Long distance navigation sat at the forefront of scientific knowledge at the time, yet reliable clocks were still a luxury. The time ball was therefore essential, and similar systems could be found in ports across the world.
Architecture and Later Use
Built of local Barrabool freestone, the Former Geelong Telegraph Station is an early and fine example of simple Georgian design. The symmetrical front façade, parapeted slate hip roof, and centrally located square tower give the building a strong civic presence. The smooth stonework of the front façade contrasts with the rougher stone of the side walls, while decorative quoining and classical detailing demonstrate the craftsmanship of early masonry construction in Victoria.

In 1870, telegraph services were amalgamated with the post office, and the building became the postmaster’s residence until 1881. It was later occupied by various government departments and served as offices for the Health Department until 1971. Since that time, the building has continued to play a role in Geelong’s civic life, housing uses such as a tourist information centre and a photographer’s studio.
